Default K301 Head

I've finally tore down the K301 from my 129 and the block and crank are ready to head out to the machine shop.

The major reason the engine stopped running though was it burned the head out. It suitable for nothing more then scrap.

So I've been looking for a used head. It seems like there's pile of the ones with the more centered spark plug hole. The one that came on my engine has the offset hole.

Is there a big advantage to one over the other? I know the tin on top would have to change too but that's not an issue as the muffler shield is shot anyway. Just trying to figure out if I should just get one of the more plentiful type or hold out for what came on the engine.

You can use either. They moved the plug for emission reasons I believe. It can make more power than the centered plug, but you don't really see much benefit unless you do something other than stock to the motor. I am not a puller, but I build engines, I am told you see the greatest benefit when over 4K RPM. All in all, the choice is yours. It won't affect anything. If you can't find one, put an ad in the wanted section.

Not a bad idea, I'll do just that.

Thanks,

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
