Default M18/M20 compression values

Hey gang,

I finally bought a compression tester today and ran a couple of my tractors thru the test.

2082 was 95/105 lbs which seems ok. I think the manual said over 90-lbs was spec.

BUT the 1872 was only 70/83 lbs.

how big of a problem are those readings?
the 1872 had a bad gas in crankcase problem recently which is fixed but I'm guessing a head gasket replacement is in order. I doubt either tractor has had any head gasket work done ever and it will be my first time doing it.

I read the great head gasket articles in the technical reference so I think I've got it.

Do I need to pull the engine for that job or just the tins?
thanks all.

No need to pull the engine for this job. Pull the tins, and the rest is easy! Clean everything up good and check the valves and the cylinder while you are in there.

Have you ran the 1872 since you got it fixed?

Thanks J -
yes the 1872 has been running fine but only for short times in the garage and around the yard with my 4yr old while I was watching the carb and oil level to make sure no more gas was getting in the crankcase. I haven't done any real work with it yet this year, other tractors for that for now!

I've been reviewing the k series and Magnum service manuals and had a couple questions on the Valves.

1. I see the K series has screws to adjust the valve clearance.
How do you increase valve clearance on a Magnum Twin if required? I know you grind it to decrease but didn't understand how to increase.

2. Is a valve spring compression tool absolutely required? I also plan on re-seating/lapping the valve seats.

There's over 800 hours on the M18 and I doubt it's ever been touched.

Thx
Tim

Replace the valves.

If it runs fine, I'd leave it alone. You want to lap them that's fine, but you need a valve grinder to face the stem if they clearance needs adjusted. They are HARD. I suppose it's not required to use the proper tool...... but it is easier.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
