Default How do you restore plastic panels on a 1641?

I have a 1641 an the hood an side panels are pretty faded, I was wondering if anyone has tryed to restore them. Should I just paint them an if so what was there original color? It looks like a cream color now but I wasn't sure if they used to be white. Im not going for a full restoration I just want to clean it up some this winter. Thanks for any info.

generally once plastic starts to lose its color theres no going back, if the color is ok but dull you can try buffing it. the best bet to make it look new is to paint it but make sure the paint is flexible enough for plastic and use an adhesion promoter so it doesnt peel. to paint plastic you want to scuff it with a gray scuff pad real good and wash it with hot soapy water, once it drys wipe it down with degreaser and spray on the adhesion promoter followed by the paint.

You might try a little rubbing compound in a test area to see if it's just oxidation.

If you paint..
When prepping for paint on anything it's always a good idea to wash it and use wax/grease remover BEFORE you start sanding. Reason being if there's any wax or oils you can embed them in the scratches making it difficult to remove. That is until the solvents in the paint hit it...

BTW, this is not an opinion, just about all brands state this in their p sheets and labels. For example, CLICK. (note the first bullet point).

As Olds455 mentioned there are flex additives for paint as well as adhesion promoters you can use.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replys guys. Im gonna go ahead an paint them this fall. Do any of you guys know if they are supposed to be white or a off white color? I have looked up many pictures of other 1641's an still can't figure out what they are supposed to be. Some look lighter than others.

Rather than restore faded plastic panels, I simply re-cycle them!!

It is better for the environment and my stress level!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
