Changing the Steering Column
First you have to raise it up. I used a log chain and my handy dandy Cub Lifter (TM):biggrin2.gif:
The old column came out on 2 pieces. The new column has the 3 turn worm and all the upgrades in it. The PO or some idiot decided to replace the tierod ends with bigger ones and drilled out the hole on the steering box. And to make matters worse they welded the tierod end on to the drag link.

Then they shortened the draglink because it was to long now.
It also appears the tierod was shortened as well, you can't see it very well in the picture, but the end has been cut and rewelded.

This also means the spindles have been drilled out as well, it appears somebody has taken a cutting torch to the tops of the spindles, I assume to remove the old bolts and the new bolts I believe are also welded in.
I just hope I can get to the end of all this rigging that somebody has done.

The sad part is I think I have the tierod ends here that will fit it. I have a piece of a Snapper RER and I haven't checked them yet, but they look like they will fit.
EDIT: I went out and looked and I am almost positive that they will work.

I like to do repairs the correct way. Looks like the old owner had spent more time jerry-rigging the problem rather than repairing the problem the correct way. But some things I farmer-fix is very cool, and I keep on working, BUT NOT ON MY CUBBY would I do that!

Man want a difference the new steering box makes. I have to turn the wheel more, but it doesn't have all the slop it had before.
I was doing good until the belt came off.

Were do you find the 3 turn worm? What other upgrades did you do?

I bought this off ebay. It has the bearing in the top (instead of the bushing), the needle thrust bearing in the side, and the plate has been straightened. New bearings in the bottom, and anything else that needed to be replaced or rebuilt. Properly adjusted and ready to bolt in.
It was $200, but I didn't have a column worth fixing. I still have some slop to deal with, the saddle where the axle mounts in is loose so I will fix that later.
