Default CH-18's Broken rocker arm bolt

Received a 2186 for free, previous owner said there was no compression. Assuming it was the head gasket I started the tear down. Upon removing the valve cover I saw that one of the rockers, pushrod, and bolt were all out of place.

Upon further inspection, I realize the bolt was sheared right off!

No idea how to get that thing out. I also don't want to spend abotu $120 for a new head. Help?? Much thanks

Use a bolt extractor or get a used head.

It's probably not in there tight. Left handed drill bit will probably pull it out without having to use an extractor.

Common problem with this engine as stated before a screw extractor or left hand drill (should) bring it out and $1.50 metric bolt from Kohler dealer, make sure of torque spec. for this bolt when replacing

Default CH-18 Rocker Arm Bolt Snapped

You mentioned that this is a common problem with the CH-18. What causes this and what is the solution?

I have a CH-18 that broke a rocker arm bolt. Got an easy out to get it out and replaced. Ran for about 10 minutes and now it's broken one on the other side! Uhhhh!

I'm afraid it's deeper than just taking the rocker cover off and replacing a broken screw. It would be nice if that's all, but I fear the worst!

I would have just replaced all 4 at the same time. its a known problem. they all have the same amount of run time on them and the cost isn't that great

A good prickpunch and a small hammer you can probably tap that broken stud out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
