Default Happy With the 1641

So I like it. So much so I'm thinking of either a Sleeve hitch or a Cat 0. Can either be had for these tractors?

Good to hear. A Cat 0 is what you need but they are hard to find and usually not cheap. You would need a 389 or like Sam said give Aaron a call.

The vanguard has died on me. It had a little bit of a surge at idle to low rpm's ran great at full throttle. It has gotten worse and to the point of not worth trying to run it. I've pulled the tank, drained and cleaned, new fuel lines filter, unplugged the shutoff valves. A different not new fuel pump, I know is good. So I figured my next step was to rebuild the carb. It also had a oil leak behind the pto, so I've pulled the motor. Change one might as well do both seals. Noticed a little oil leaking at the bottom of the dipstick tube. the seal there was hard as a rock. So when I pulled the dipstick tube out of the seal, it crumbled and pieces of it feel into the crank case.

Well that's not good news. Depending on how much of the old seal went inside you may be looking at pulling the front cover on the engine. Pump has a screen on it but I still don't like junk inside that's not supposed to be there.

My guess is the surging is still carb related. Since you have the engine out you may want to think about pulling the carb and giving it a good cleaning. The Vanguards tend to surge when the slow speed jet gets plugged up a bit. They are set very lean to begin with thanks to EPA and the have a little plastic cap on the needle so that you can't adjust them. I've had a couple that I had to cut the limiter off on the cap so that I could adjust them.

I had the same problem with my 1641, the carb is preaty much rebuildable from the top the way it's set up. I pulled mine appart and cleaned it but it didn't help. Then I realized there is a low idle screw on the carb, it's on the side that the drive shaft is on. It is a bugger to get to when the engine is in. I removed that screw and blasted it and the hole with carb cleaner. Then it purred at all throdle ranges. When I reinstalled it I turned it all the way in then backed it out one and a half turns.
One thing I do when cleaning carbs is I strip a bread tie to just the metal wire and poke every microscopic hole through the throat of the carb.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
