Default Sputtering CC 1420

Fellow OCC'ers,

I have a 1420 for killing grass with a 44" deck. it has Kohler Magnum 14HP that is causing me problems.

unit starts relatively well with the choke, but once running, it sputters quite a bit, more so when the increase the speed.

the symptoms are almost like a mis-fire, at full throttle, it hesitates, spews out a little black smoke and then finally seems to be a proper power.

when i decrease the throttle, it idles very roughly (ie: sputters) and flumes black smoke, with a slight knocking.

the spark plug wires seem a little "worn", meaning look somewhat cracked on the outside. oil consumption is minimal, nothing that seems abnormal, always use 93 octane gas.

Any troubleshooting or comment you may have to help me out would be greatly appreciated, i am by no means a mechanic, like many if not most of you , but can certainly do alot of the external visuals and adjustments.

thanks,
mowin

Well, unfortunately I was not able to get any feedback on my first post, so thinking I might need to rebuild the carb with a kit.

My problem is that the Kohler motor nameplate is incomplete.
the spec # is 56509
the s/n is 1808105187
the model # is blank ! (nothing printed)

the casing has the Magnum 14 labeling.

I have searched this site and the web to try and find the model through this information, but to no avail. How can I figure out the model to get the right parts for the engine.
thanks in advance.

Thanks Sam,. much appreciated. I had gone there as well, wondering if I can "assume" the model is MV16S on the Magnum 14. (but I was thinking that the "14" and the "16" was referring to the HP)

the reason I refer to this, is that the bay has a full motor with the same spec number, same "magnum 14" nomenclature and shows the nameplate as a MV16S, although the s/n is in the 22XXXXXXX series. (mine is in the 18's)
thanks,
mowin

I Googled Kohler MV16S and found this. Click on page F

Carb number is the same as the parts tree listing. J-Mech can probably help you more.

Thanks Sam, I appreciate it. Yes, I read some old posts that J-Mech had/has a1420 with similar issues, I hope he chimes in

I am not a weekend mechanic (nor claim to be!!) but HECK, is there no "internal kits" available for a carb that won't cost $300+ ???
thanks,
mowin

EDIT: looks like there is a kit that is more reasonably priced.

Everything looks to be going good. Sorry we all dropped the ball on your first post. Sam has you pointed in the correct direction. All the Mag motors take the same carb kit. The kit you posted is correct. If you want a cheaper one, Prime Line part number is 7-07056. I don't know what part stores you have where your at. O'Reilly's carries Prime Line, and I think some Napa stores too. If you don't have any of those close, you can buy online.

O'Reilly's: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...eyword=7-07056 It's like $15 here. IDK what that is in Canada.

Thank J-Mech, I will be in PA next week, so I will try and locate a dealer there that carries the them. Hopefully the carb is my problem, either way, it won't hurt putting in a new kit.

thanks,
mowin

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
