This has me wondering if there is any difference between the 14 and 12.5 Vanguard.

I'm pretty sure the 12.5 is a different cubic inch motor.

Just for kicks I checked the Vanguard site and it's the same. Same bore and stroke and compression ratio. Entertaining issue we have here.

I pulled the service manual but it is listed by cubic inch (or model number) not by HP, so I didn't know. That is interesting....... So, we know the carbs have to be different. Or at least the throttle plate is limited. May have different timing too. Are the flywheels the same for all of them? |

I didn't check into the 12.5 but the 14 and 16 have the same carbs and flywheels per parts tree. I'm temped to call Vanguard and ask.

I'd be interested to hear what they have to say. There is a 12.5 near me for sale right now. I wasn't interested because of HP. But if Bore and stroke is the same we can make the HP some other way.

Gotta' be careful about replacement parts. Flywheels, pistons, carbs, etc. The OEM part could have been totally different from each engine but for replacement, the 16 hp replacement part could replace any of the lesser parts. |

Just talked with a local guy here and he confirmed that only the throttle stop is different on the 12.5 thru 16.
He's worked on several of them over the years. |

Very interesting stuff here. Especially since I have one of these in my Ingersoll 3012.

As a follow up, it appears both diodes shorted as the insulation over them has split open and looks like it got hot.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
