Refreshed the 54 inch mower for the 1782
This mower had large patches of paint missing and rust showing when I bought the tractor last year and I finally got around to fixing it over the past two weeks. New paint, spindle bearings, races and seals, four new wheels, new bushings and wheel bolts for the front, drilled out the spot welds and replaced the bearing in the idler pulley as Sam Mac described previously, bored out the two rubber rollers with a 7/8 inch paddle bit and inserted a piece of plastic electrical conduit to eliminate most of the play in them. The new belt will be installed tomorrow after I remember how to route it. The dealer I tried to buy the front wheel bolts from could not get the part to come up in his parts system. He thought I gave him a bad part number, but when he went to the Cub site he got the same number I had. So- I went to Lowes and bought two 6 inch long 5/8 inch bolts and went to my friends machine shop so he could make them. They start out as a 5/8 inch bolt for about an inch, then step down to 1/2 inch for another 2 or 2 1/2 inches and then are threaded for a 3/8 x 16 nut on the end.
The leaves are falling pretty well now so I am looking forward to killing them with the mower. It does a great job on them and I don't own a leaf cart like some people in South Carolina do.

Good job on the deck. I sure wish the plastic on it's older brother was that nice when I bought it.

Deck looks great. Maybe this will help with the belt install. Crazy looking routing.

Thanks for the inputs guys.
gdheck-I had to replace the nose plastic when I brought the tractor home and still need a new right side panel. That one is bolted together at the cutout, but it works, so I'll look for a replacement one of these days. SamMac- Thanks for the belt routing illustration. I thought I had printed off that illustration early last year when I had a reason to put the belt back on it, but I couldn't find it yesterday. CADplans- That belt drive needs to stay in your yard!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
