Hot Rod "O"
Ive been hangin on ti this '62 "O" for awhile hoping to find a parts donor but nothing has shown up locally. I bought the tractor as is because I needed the aftermarket engine on another project. I dont want to chop/modify the tractor but I do want to put it to some use....
So last weekend I picked up a 16hp opposed twin Onan I can install using an adapter plate, I can cover the battery and front of the steering tower with a polished aluminum firewall and build a custom 'hot rod' style grill to conceal the fuel tank. Dual stacks, no hood.... and use it just as a wagon hauler at the local annual farm/tractor show.

I pulled the O into the shop and set the engine in place so I can get some measurements and see what Im up against. I'll have to design and fab a pulley on the engine but mechanically it looks to be a simple enough transplant. Will even have room to add a front pto later on if needed. Put a couple pieces of abs pipe over the exhaust ports as substitute stacks to get an idea how it will look.... and I think it looks promising. I work in a large custom metal shop so most of the fabrication will be simple to do and cheap, although we cant make a nice aluminum gas tank so I may have to out source for that.

I f all your going to do with it is tow a wagon you can turn the engine around and drive it off the end with the pulleys, you only need the flip the ring gear in the rear.

Looks pretty cool, Lance! I may drag my O out of the barn today and see how my 23 horse diesel looks on it!

The crank would look cool hanging down as it stuck out of the grill!! Cranking the machine to start it would even be cooler!! |

I actually wondered if flipping it around might be possible but then the hot air off the engine would be blowing right at my legs so that may be a little uncomfortable. With engine this way all that air will be pushed out the grill and I'll still have the option to put a pto on the front if/when I find a purpose for one... and just for the 'cool' factor... it could still have a hand crank... I hadn't thought about that possibility.
Any ideas are welcome and appreciated

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
