Default M & W on a CCO

Yesterday a new member here (jdonovan) posted a craigslist ad for an Original fitted with an M & W 9 speed. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=36699

It appears to still be for sale, I can not believe someone here hasn't jumped on it. I realize the tractor itself isn't very nice, but is this guy really all that far out of line on his price?

Why is this thing still for sale?

Not sure, I REALLY want it, but that's a lot of coin for something that's just cool and not very useful.

Do you know what the purpose of having the overdrive was for? If it had a particular purpose.

He's probably right on with his price. And they made only 100 or so of them according to the serial numbers found. I think a couple are gone when Charlie had his fire up in Minnesota. IIRC, he had a NOS one or two that were lost.

It would be cool to have, but that is alot of coin for me. Neat to have, restore, and show, but if someone was buying to put it away and sell later for a profit, I don't think the value will go up much more. IMHO, prolly at the ceiling pricewise. I don't have a crystal ball and could be all wet, too.

Im not sure but I know on the old ford tractors that had the Sherman transmission the purpose of the overdrive was to go faster on the road from field to field, on a lawn mower I'm not really sure there's any practical reason.

The 2 'tweener gears would be nice, but idk if 7 hp would be enough to mow faster than 3mph either.

Looks overpriced to me. I figure the M&W is worth around $1K. That means your going to pay $1250 for a blue painted "O" with no other options. I'd say $1500 would still be high, but not quite so out of line. It'd be different if the machine was restored and the right color. Then it might be worth the asking price.

It has been a while since I have seen an M & W, let alone one for sale. I think that last one that I saw sold for around $1300 or $1400 by itself and that was several years ago. Might be applicable on a Tim Allen lawn mower. Nonetheless, it would still be nice to see it planted in a 4 digit O.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
