1810 Oil leak 18HP twin
Need some help on an oil leak that just started happening.
I am in the Louisville area and as you may have heard we have a LOT of snow to plow. My 1810 with a Twin 18hp Kohler started leaking oil at a fast pace while I was plowing. It did this on the last snow plowing session too but I could not find the leak source. I even cleaned it all up added some oil and ran it around on the drive for about a half hour but NO leak, then today when I started plowing it started again, went through maybe a pint. The leak seems to be at the PTO side of the engine and seems to only happen when it is working hard, I can even see it dripping but can't find it because of all the shrouds and everything else in the way. That side of the engine is where the oil pump is. I also notice that there are a few drips back by the filter. Any ideas of what may be the leak source. Thanks, Jayflyer

My guess is the crank seal gave up. Seems to be a very common issue with the KT's and the Mags. Not a big deal to fix. The engine guys will be along to explain what you need to do to replace it.

I'm with Sam. From the description, it sounds like the front seal. (Front to you and I, but rear seal to Kohler. The engine is in "backwards".) Since you have it on a snowplow, remove the PTO and run the tractor for a little while. You will see the leak if that's where it is.

I replaced mine last winter. Pretty easy fix I took advantage of the down time and pulled it out to clean the cooling fins and general maintenance.

Oil leak on 1810 with Kohler M18S
Thanks guys.
I'll pull the front grill and hood off and take a look. Can the seal be replaced without pulling the engine and splitting the crankcase. Since I'm a beginner at working on this engine are there any good information on how best to go about it. I had to replace the front hydro seal last year and the fuel pump, so I am gradually learning my way around this Cub. I bought it new back in 1989.
