If it's a carb issue I feel like it should atleast try to fire or run. Is the gas just dripping out or pouring out of the carb? I had a carb opened way up for a stock altered that I couldn't get enough gas to unless I had the float set higher than it should have to be, but would only run out of the carb after it sat for about five minutes so I just had to shut gas off before it ran out. It really could be anything we've stated. I do think the carb is a good spot to start though as you've both stated. my question is do you still had to set timing for the crank trigger or is it set automatically. I've never used one so I really don't know exactly how they work.
