1650 w/ Onan 20hp
I have been working on customizing a 1650 and wanted to power it with a Onan p220. My question is can this be done and what to do about the dramatic change in shaft sizes and what to do as far as a drive shaft. Any suggestion would help and greatly appreciated. will post pic when completed.

I'd pick an engine a little more user friendly and something that don't have outrageously priced parts. you'll have to pretty much fab stuff as you go.

I agree. Onans don't have the best reputation. And expensive parts. I'd go with an 18 Hp Kohler.

Take a look on Craig's list for a 2160, 2165 or 2185 Cub. First 2 have 16HP Vanguards the last one is a CH18 Kohler. They are my Fav organ donors. The 2160's usually have low hours because the trans in them tend to take a dump at low hours.

Just wanted to add that if you have a good running Onan you should be able to sell it for some decent $$$$$. The WFM guys like to spend HD (Huge Dollars) for the Green tractors.

Ok so if you had a 982 with a working Onan in it, would you re-power and sell the engine, ok keep it and rebuild? Sounds to me if not concerned with originality than a re-power would be less expensive and better over all?
Just a side note the 982 has the PTO and original 3pt, nice metal and is in decent condition,,,, |

If your looking to "restore" the tractor and show it only, keep the Onan.
Otherwise: Repower |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
