Onan Oil Plug?
Hey Guys,
I drained the oil out on my 982 for the first time last night. I realized the oil plug is in a horrible spot! I'd really like to install an oil valve so it's easier to do oil changes! I have 2 I'm looking at but I'm unsure of the size of the actual oil plug. I know I used a 3/4 socket to remove it but that is not what they show on the charts on the Valve site. http://www.qwikvalve.com/Heavy-Duty-...oto-Valve.html http://www.ezoildrainvalve.com/industrial-engines.html Can someone verify what size the actual plug is? I'm guessing it's a 3/8" NPT plug. but I'd really like to make sure I'm ordering the right thing the first time.

Well since you have the plug out take it to a hardware store and compare it to different size pipe.

I replaced the plug in mine last year. For some reason I think it had a flange with an O-ring. If so it wouldn't be NPT, possible NPS, not certain. I'm pretty sure mine came from Cub Cadet Warehouse, don't know if Cadet still offers it or not. I remember while draining the oil that it would probably be less mess to either pull the engine or drop the deck and mule drive. Some re-engineering is certainly in order!

Well, It's definitely not a 3/8"! I have some 3/8" bolts and nuts and it does not fit.. it's much bigger.
I need to go find my calipers!

A 3/8 NPT is not a 3/8 SAE ( bolt thread)
Go to the Hwd/home cheepo or Blows and compare or ask a friend Edit: Parts tree shows it as a fine thread headed plug, with "O" ring, as J.. Hall stated. So caliper and thread pitch gauge will tell you for sure. It will not be a pipe plug, unless it has been re threaded.

3/8" bolt threads and 3/8" Iron Pipe threads (and sizes) are two totally different animals.
