1863 power steering update
I finally got my power steering fixed. The steering pump (box) was bad. I got in touch with the po and took it to his shop. He put another pump on it and the upper steering column. It was hanging up a little at the joint.
Anyway I now have one finger power steering. As for as the plumbing, it's exactly the same as I had it in the pictures on my previous post. It can only work one way, so I know it's correct. Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. Especially Sam for all the time he spent trying to get this thing going. It's all appreciated. |

Glad to hear that you got it working. When you get time please post pics of the way it's plumbed now. I hope to learn from this one so that if it comes up in the future I'll be better informed. Maybe the service manual is wrong about what are the pressure and return lines. I just want to understand more about what the issue was. Good to see that the OP manned up and took care of the problem. Too many won't stand behind what they sell.

Handpumps don't fail..... They will leak, and I've had to replace a few but it's extremely rare.... and it was on a larger machine with 10K plus hours on it. My bet is the OP "rebuilt" it and put the valve rotor (or possibly another part) in wrong. They will only work installed one way. There are several different fails if it is installed wrong. It may steer hard. It may "motor" on it's own to max one direction, or the other. It may not work at all (can't even budge the wheel). Ask me how I know. My bet is the one you had could have been repaired/ fixed ... but doesn't matter now.
Glad you got it fixed! |

Agree with J mech,
What I'd like to know is exactly what did he do to take care of the problem? I resealed a "pump" that had the 2 springs crushed, but the effort was normal, it just was leaking slightly. After resealing it and putting in 6 new springs, it worked fine except with slightly more effort. Took it back apart and nothing wrong, so wondered if using lighter springs or omitting 1 large and 1 small would allow less effort?? Experience Johnathon? |

I ask him about rebuilding it and he said he doesn't rebuild them. He just put another one on it off the shelf. Maybe somebody rebuilt it before he got it. We'll never know.

I've never tried eliminating springs. In theory, I can't see that it would make any difference because their job is to center the valve rotor after you stop steering. Not sure why it steered slightly harder after a rebuild, I just don't know that that ever happened to me. Not that I noticed, or anyone mentioned anyway. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
