Jerky hydrostat
Would a somewhat jerky hydrostat (IE no matter how slowly/gently the lever is pushed or pulled it doesn't gently slow to a stop it jerks.) be contributed to a too-loose friction nut? Also, I was towing a rather large tree branch- no problem- but I had to hold the hydro lever in the forward position or it would just return to N.
I know the manual says 10 lbs of force but I don't have a scale to gauge it.

The friction nut would cause the issue of not holding speed and COULD cause the jerky issue. As for as 10ft/lb, it doesn't have to be exact. Park the tractor, turn it off, get a wrench on the friction nut and tighten 1/8 of a turn or so and try the lever to see if it's any better. Rinse and repeat until the friction level in the handle feels good to you. It should be firm but not hard to push (you'll know it when you feel it, may take some working with)
