Do you know if it ever got towed? That's the #1 reason a pump would lunch itself. Sometimes they can be rebuilt, if nothing cracked. But since they are relatively plentiful and inexpensive, replacing it is probably your best option once you go through testing all the easier "could be's." Good luck!

Thanks all, I looked at the manual on how to decouple the tractor, I am tossing up whether I should do a filter/oil change or just rip into it and get the pump off, I don't want to waste a new filter and oil. I noticed today that the rear shaft on the pump was spinning but the tractor was going no where with about 1/4 throttle and half forward on control lever. As soon as I find out the problem after getting pump out I will re-post here to show you all what crapped out

Drain the oil, if you find metal when you drain the oil then I wouldn't bother to change the oil and filter until you find out what failed and repair it. If no metal then go get a NAPA1410 or Wix51410 filter and some hydro oil from Wally world or TSC and do a change. If that doesn't get it going drain the new oil into a clean container so that you can reuse it. At this point you don't have much to lose. The fact that the shaft coming out of the back is spinning and it's making bad sounds is not a good sign.

Would normal hydraulic oil work or does it need to be marked hydro static trans on bottle?

I buy mine at TSC. It's equivalent to HY-TRANS Plus (MS-1207), the recommended hydraulic fluid for IHC

Ok I just did a oil change and new filter and so far it seems to be all working again. I could not do a big test because it was late and the neighbors might get upset if I started to hot rod around the yard on a Cubby. The filter was damn tight to get off and I removed the back diff cover to drop the oil, there was a fair bit of jelly type stuff which seem to melt when touched, I also think the filter was half blocked from this god knows how many years of this jellied trans oil.
Big thanks to Ford4150 for steering me towards the right oil to get, I will run this for a week I think to let the new oil wash around and then maybe do another oil/filter change just to be safe, at 18 bucks for 2 gallons it's not going to break the bank. Thanks to every one for their much appreciated advice, now I can move on to other little things to fix on it. Here some pics of the rear end, the plate clearly shows where the level has been sitting for many years. ![]() ![]() and the bad boy ![]() and the next fixes needed ![]() ![]() New seat coming this week

Glad it was an easy fix.
You should think about a hydraulic lift for your thrower and tiller

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
