Picture of the Week: October 11, 2015
This weeks submission is sent to us by local member tobo127 aka Tom Bohle from North Carolina. Tom comments "I moved to the foothills of North Carolina two years ago. I was looking for a garden tractor capable of using ground engaging implements to do lawn and garden work in retirement. I found this rough, non-running 127 on Craigslist for $125 fairly close to me (approx. 40 miles). I then found a model 1 tiller with gearbox even closer (about 10 miles, for another $125). After a year of tinkering off and on, scraping, sanding, painting, welding, repairing/replacing/refurbishing worn/missing parts I ended up with a fine running example of old iron worth every penny that I invested, especially when comparing what the same dollar value would buy today for a new plastic and sheet metal wannabe "tractor" at the big box stores. These are a simple design and easy to work on. Not knowing the history of the tractor, I tore everything down to the basics to check condition (including the hydro unit). The tractor came with a model 421U1116 42" mower deck and the tiller will be hung from the three point hitch with spring assist that I picked up from Patton. I acquired other parts here and there from fellow members, a special thanks for their support. Still missing a few insignificant parts but this is going to be a working machine, and as such, I just wanted to make it rust free and functional. Thanks to all for the informative forum and any answers to questions I asked along the way. It's been a lot of fun rebuilding and look forward to many years of use." Thanks for the submission Tom!!!

Thanks to all for the kind words, it's been fun working on this beast. Can't wait to use the tiller to prep a garden in this red clay! Hope it does what I need. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
