LT1042 rear wheels will not move freely
I purchased a LT1042 about 8-9 yrs ago and used it for 3 Louisiana summers before storing it for the last 5 years. I'm assuming the issue has do do with the long term storage as it has only 83 hrs logged and was running fine prior to it being stored. After a recent move to SC, a large yard, and springtime upon us, i pulled out the CC to tune it up for the season only to realize that the rear wheels are locked and will not move. The wheels will not move freely with the hydrostatic bypass engaged into neutral. The bypass actuator lever/linkage looks to have the correct throw and all other linkages, including the brake, look to work properly. I came across a LT1042 parts manual that stated 'IF' you're transmission has a drain plug...apparently mine does not as it should be located directly under the actuator lever. I assume the drain plug is incorporated into he higher end Series 1000 models and not the base LT1042. I currently have the rear end jacked off the ground and the wheels move freely simultaneously in opposite directions.
The rear wheels being locked was a real problem when trying to load this beast into a 26' Uhaul for the move! To add insult to 'literal' injury, the front tire was flat, my air compressors were already buried behind 15' of accumulated treasures, and i had to load it by myself.... Ive found limited information here and through other sources regarding this issue. Any thoughts or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks, Joe |

My guess is that the disk brake is rusted to the brake pucks. Brake is on the right side of the trans as your sitting on the machine. If you can get it running maybe you can get it free by trying to move it forward and reverse.

Sam Mac,
Yes, i believe you're correct about the disk brake. I just noticed this potential issue and was about to post a follow up. I disassembled the brake parts to see what was going on. With the disk brake housing nuts loosened, the axle will rotate forward and reverse for both wheels simultaneously. I just need to clean the rust and junk from the brake unit, get a battery, and get her running again. With the way my luck was going with this move to SC, i jumped the gun and assumed the worst by thinking it may be the hydrostatic bypass. Thanks for your reply and suggestion as it was spot on! Joe |

LT1042 back in service...working perfectly. SamMac - you were right. the 'pucks' were frozen/locked in place with the disc pads sandwiched tightly around the rotor. A little disassembly, cleaning and a new battery and she's back in action. Started and ran perfectly form the moment i hit the ignition.
Thanks for the quick response, |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
