Yep, that would be DA SPRING! Also they have a few different designs for the Vanguard starters depending mostly on if the ring gear is aluminum or steel. You really need to have the engine numbers to get the proper one. The early aluminum ring gears were replaceable but they are NLA. I had to buy a used flywheel just to get the proper ring gear for one then drill out the rivets, then drill and tap my flywheel in order to bolt the used gear onto it. Think I have a thread about here someplace, I'll try to dig it up.

Run into something like that on a toro self propelled hand mower,tejunkski power TNT 120.
bought it in maybe '72 for Mom, has a 12V starter on a 20" mower.
Mom was around then, and she liked the key starter, as she could not pull the rope.
Long story short it liked to eat nylon starter pinions.
So I found a metal pinion. no more pinion problem till it knocked a tooth off the aluminum flywheel/ ring gear.
so much for that idea.
That old mower is still in the barn, like a lot of stuff I need to get rid of.

If you use the steel pinion on an aluminum ring gear, you'll shell the teeth off the ring gear.

I believe the steel pinions and the plastic pinions have a different pitch between the teeth as well.

The starters I have all look (should look like) the ones on the right. I think the ones on the left are later.

All my 16 Vanguard starters are off 1990's 1641's .

This mess came out of a late 1641. I was told it was a good runner and just needed a tune up, yeah right. Anyway looks like it had been run hot, one of the exhaust guides had walked up in the head and jammed the valve, 2 bent push rods, 2 missing teeth on the ring gear and no teeth on the starter. Fixed it and put in my pressure washer.

Oh, back to the topic. Here is the starter out of the 1440 I just sunk too much cash into. $20 some dollars for the new gear drive kit. That one had some mangled teeth.

I got a B&S dealer to break up two starter drive kits and sell me just the spring, cage and retaining clip. I didn't need the rest of it.
