Question GT 2544 Hour Meter Failure / No PTO (and a childhood story)

Greetings!

Last fall, I nearly finished mowing my property when the PTO on my GT 2544, disengaged and the Hour Meter went blank. The engine continued to run but I could not reengage the PTO. Also, now the red LED indicator on the ignition switch plate is illuminated when turned to the Reverse Mow Bypass position without pushing the safety button.

So now, I started troubleshooting the problem but its a bit hard to accomplish this without a wiring diagram. I went to the Cub Cadet web sight and looked for a service manual or, at the very least, electrical schematics for the 2500 series machines but found no reference to it. Its like they neglected the model completely. However, the online parts lookup tool does recognize the 2500 series machine and I found a part number of the hour meter for my tractor. I'm guessing the 2500 is a hybrid of the 2100 and 3000 series and might share parts / assemblies with them.

Here are my concerns -
1. Did the PTO Clutch short and kill the hour meter?
2. Is there a standalone relay that runs the clutch and if so, did it fail?
3. Is there a discrete fuse placed somewhere for part of the harness that blew
and I can't locate and if so, why did it blow?
4. I there a safety switch somewhere that failed such as, a neutral safety, seat or PTO?
5. Is there one of those ridiculous fusible links that the auto manufactures used to use, located in the harness somewhere that fried and if so, why?

I'm hoping someone here has run into this and could possibly provide an electrical schematic so that I'm not guessing about what signal / voltage goes where. I just don't want to spend $75.00 + and have it NOT be the problem or have more than one problem OR blow-up a new electrical part!

I'm not in my workshop right now so I can't provide the model or serial numbers at this time but the build date is 3/2007. I will provide those numbers if needed.

WARNING:
One more thing you might like to hear (or not). Waaaaayyyyy back in 1976, I used to cut grass for people in my neighborhood. Sort of the local lawn boy. $5 per "normal lawn" lawn $8 for a double lot. I didn't care, I was able to use their equipment and some of them had tractors!! Heaven for a 14 yr old boy!! Anyway, I was fortunate enough to mow the grass for one of my old elementary school teachers. Her husband passed away the year before and she asked me to do it. When I first got there, she took me to a little broken down old shed and I thought, "oh man, it's gonna be an ole piece of junk!" She swung open the door and there... there was an almost perfect old 1961 model 60 (I think thats the model) IH Cub Cadet!! WooHoo! I hit pay dirt. So long story short, I got a call several years later saying she died and that she left me that old Cub Cadet in her will!! But, stupid me, I couldn't store it and had to pass it up. Someone got a great machine. Still kick myself.

Thanks a bunch,
Kenny G.

Default Only one reply?

I'm a bit surprised. No other replies? Huh. Ok. Thank you for the opportunity to post my question.

Ken.

Most on here like the pre-1998 machines. I do not have hardly any experience with the newer ones. Do not give up, someone will get you a diagram.

Here is one for a GT2542 that might be close enough.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
