As far as the knock....maybe..... sometimes it sounds like it has a slight knock and sometimes it actually sounds great. The engine was completely cold in the video.... hadn't ran all day and it was about 35 in the garage. The smoke.... yea it smokes a lot for the first couple minutes it's running, but goes away visually after a few minutes, although you can still faintly smell burning oil even if you don't see the smoke. The engine in the 682 is supposed to be good......Supposing that it is, I am at a little bit of a cross roads on where to go from here. I can use the 682 as a parts tractor and make the 782 as nice as possible. Swap engines and whatever else the 782 needs. I can rebuild the 782 engine....but there's not a lot of benefit here, other than having a rebuilt engine....the 682 is still in rough shape and I'm a few hundred poorer at that point.

Well
I'm not convinced it has excessive blow back,---------- yet. pulling an oil fill cap off on a warm/hot engine will usually give you oil in yer face! kind of like looking @ a nozzle of a garden hose and pulling the handle, then thinking Duh,that was stupid. I hear the rattle John hears, but be advised the valve train on those things are noisy, some more than others. I'd go slow in calling it a bad engine, till you warm it up and check things out. With the air cleaner element removed, a hot engine will puff a small amount of air but not slobber oil out of the crankcase vent as John said . Go slow and methodically. |

Glad you saw this and posted. Like I said, been a while since I pulled the cap off a running one. You don't seldom do it for this very reason.... plus like you said, on a hot motor it will spray oil everywhere. Like I said, a quick compression check will tell a lot. |

40 years ago I decided to check the oil in my go-cart--with it running. Lets just say mama wouldn't let me in the house. Some lessons you never forget.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
