K321/a/s/q/aqs fitment in 147
I am finding that I have to be on my toes to achieve my goal to fill the engine compartment of this 147 at a reasonable price. (everything forward of the driveshaft) Rebuild-able is OK. I missed out on a 149 by just minutes.
It will lose some of its mystique by not having a S/G hanging of the starboard side, but will a later model like an AQS drop into the 147? I'm see a couple of donors. *1450 w/ hyd lift, deck, replacement rear turfs, missing starter, @$300 *1250 armstrong lift, deck, OEM Firestone rears, states crank no start @$200 This leads to another question. My research shows that the internals are identical. (regardless of the model/year/series) Is there a reliability advantage between the 12 and 14hp engines?

yes and no. they do fit but there is some clearance issues with the ring gear. the 147 engine had the big flywheel with no ring gear. also , throttle linkage, choke, gas tank mounting . needs the mechanical pto, exhaust and a few things I'm forgetting. it can be done. the best donor would be a 149,
12 or 14 are equally reliable while the stroke is the same the cranks are different. there are a few other difference's, carb, bore, exhaust valve size |

Thank You for your insight Mr. Vogt.
What I meant was that it appears the internals of all 12hp's are identical and all 14hp's are identical. But I get your drift. I was expecting there may be wiring and linkage differences, exhaust, battery, and fuel cell placement. I do have the tank bracket and top head baffle that belongs to the 147. You stated that a 149 is my best option. I thought, "Is that my only option"? You are correct as always. A little more digging and I found this. http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-trac...-tractors.html Onward through the fog...

I will throw out my opinion on this. Parting a tractor with hydraulic lift to save a tractor with manual lift seems like a waste, parting a tractor that runs and drives to save a parts tractor just doesn't make sense to me. If i were you i would use the 147 parts on your other tractor like you originally intended and buy the 149 or 1450 and keep them as is, this might be a little biased because i think the 1x6/7 series tractors were the worst looking of all the older cubs, I've always thought the rear fenders looked to wide for the narrow frame. If your really stuck on trying to save the 147 try finding an engine, don't butcher a runner.

Tim. This is too funny. You must have been reading my mind. I was thinking, "why am I putting myself through this"? I only need one tractor. It mows the lawn. It pushes snow, earth, and gravel. When the snow piles get too high it will throw snow. It pulls, drags and hauls anything and everything I have around here.
As to aesthetic looks. I think they weren't meant to be beautiful. The beauty is in their function. Allowing you to do more work in less time. Thanks for the reality check.

FIX IT!!
The 147 was the 1st of the 14HP engines and the LAST of the NF's. Reason enough, right there from where I sit anyway, to keep it original if possible. It should have an electric lift, I believe. I'm at present restoring the electric lift on my 147. Just got the motor back from the rebuild shop and now working on a new translating tube w/new seals and bushings. The little guy will be mowing as soon as the 1st new blades pop in in April! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
