1872 driveshaft
Just started work on a 1872 that was given to me. The driveshaft had let go on it, destroying the two hydro lines and the driveline. The splines are good in the hydro, but everything else is destroyed from the flywheel on back - including the drive hub at the flywheel. I know there are some options for new driveshaft designs. What is my best choice since I have to replace everything? Also, I found a used pressure line from the hydro, but I am going to have to make the return line. Does anyone have a picture showing the routing of the return line?
Thanks, Jim |

Sam Mac will be along in the morning, he's in bed now, something to do with his advanced age.
Jeff in PA builds driveshafts and other drive line parts for Cubs. Top notch work he does to keep these machines going. Pictures would be appreciated of what's wrong that ain't right. Welcome to the forum.

This is an easy one. Too bad you messed up the drive cup. Suggest that you find a good used one on Flea Bay or one of the sponsors, Cub thinks it's made of gold. KH-52-755-61 KIT-CUP Price $127.11. Other than that get a CV drive shaft from an 1882 and a splined pump adapter from Jeffinpa. Try the sponsors for the drive hub and the shaft.
Your other option is to have Jeff build you a complete OEM style drive shaft. You would probably need to buy some OEM parts like the rag joints and the part that bolts to the drive cup. Zippy will be along but he's still getting his beauty rest. I've seen his pic and it's not helping.

Picture of the destruction. This is why you should do a little maintenance when things start vibrating. I am guessing that some of the brake linkage and the depth stop was also damaged, since it is missing. It has a 60" deck on it, so I am hoping to use it to mow with next summer.
I got the hydro lines made and installed this afternoon and the carburetor cleaned. No damage to the flywheel, although the drive pin was bent. No damage to the splines on the hydro. Everything in between was damaged. I can build a new driveshaft and a lot of the parts, but by the time I buy the bushings and rag joints, the best value may be to go with the 1882 driveshaft. |

I had it running 2 weeks ago, but I got a chance to drive it around a little today (and use it to pull a non-running pickup into the shop). Thanks to CubDieselFan for setting me up with a 1882 CV driveshaft. It still needs a few things before spring before the 60" deck goes back on and it becomes my "trim" mower.

Looks good! Any other major repairs needed before you can mow with it?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
