Bought a 5234D today witha FEL on it
I picked up a 2005 5234D today with the 812 FEL on it along with a 3pth and weight bucket. It also has a heavy duty trenching tool or single tooth ground cutter and a draw bar. I don't know if they were all 4x4 but this one is along with a hi/lo range and diff lock. The rear PTO looks unused but it did not come with a deck. I looked under it and cannot find any type of lifting device for a deck. Does this model have one? Everything on it works but the parking brake. I will have to paint the hood since it is faded but otherwise it looks like its in pretty good shape. Any advice with this new toy? Pics tomorrow.

I believe the weak link for the 5000 series is the transmission.I've heard of lots of trouble with finding parts and longevity.

I have no personal experience with one of those units. But I've heard a number of unfavorable stories. I hope you got one of the good ones.

That's why you research before you buy......
Yes, they have PTO failures..... and transmission failures. Google them. They have similar issues with the 5000 series as the 3000 series. Bolts coming out of the differential and breaking the case. Some parts are NLA. Sorry. Just how it is. |

Man this is a tough crowd! Looking through the manual I can see areas that will bite you if you do not follow their directions. Things like stopping to shift into lo range and 4x4 or not being under stress before engaging the Diff lock. Everything on mine works and it looks like it will make a great addition to my yard equipment. All the advice is appreciated and duly noted. But like many items on the net, it is mostly negative about just about everything. Positive posts are pretty rare.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
