Thoughts on Used Vanguard
Need a little help from the pros. I came across a used Vanguard that I am thinking of picking up to repower my 682. I'm not sure this would be a good candidate or not. They already did the carb. No ideas on hours. Any opinions as what might need to be done to bring it to a workable state are welcome. This is how they described the engine:
Briggs and Stratton Vanguard horizontal shaft engine. Removed from mini skid steer. Will start and run but chokes down under power. New carb kit and fuel pump installed but did not fix the problem. Probably needs re-build. We believe it is a 20 hp. |

Yeah, I realize that. I was just hoping someone familiar with these would say - oh yeah, probably just needs valve seals, or something really easy. Or it just needs the top end redone, and that's pretty cheap. Guess I knew in my gut I should let it go. I mean it did come off a skid steer.
I have a low hr 18hp that came off a generator, but it was propane and has the tapered shaft. I'm gonna turn an adapter on my lathe, then I just need an intake and carb off eBay and that should take care of that issue. Thanks guys |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
