Default Cyclops Help

Good afternoon,

I've found a 2082 available locally for what I think is a good price. Between my father-in-law and myself we have 9 IH GT's but this will be our first venture into the SGT line of tractors.

I've been doing a lot of research the past few days in preparation to go look at this Cyclops. I read all of Sam's "Cyclops Repairs" threads and various other threads dealing with SGTs. I've certainly learned a lot through this research and have some idea of some common issues to look for on these tractors. I would love any additional input or advice from those more familiar if you have the time. Below is my "checklist" of things I'll be on the lookout for as these seem to the most common issues..........

1. Loose/broken/stripped mounting bolts on the rear end. I plan on taking a 9/16" wrench with me to check these out.

2. Wiring Issues - not sure really what to look for here but understand the wiring on these can be tricky.

3. Condition of the Plastics - understand this can run up a high repair bill if they are in bad shape.

4. Front Axle - I've found posts mentioning potential issue with the front axles but not exactly sure what the common problems are here?

I apologize for the length but I'm trying to be as thorough as I can since I don't have any experience with the SGT's. I appreciate any help that anyone may be able to provide. Thanks guys!

Remove side panels for inspection. I would suggest looking at the safety switch locations. Is anything unplugged, bypassed with jumper wire or mechanically defeated? Test function of switches during starting and operation. Wiring around engine may be hard or cracked from the engine heat. Plastic connectors may show signs of heat, melting. Check if hydraulics function and for leaks. Look for leaks at engine and trans-axle. Drive around until it gets to normal operating temperature while checking, looking. Good luck.

You are hitting on most all of the issues. My 2284 had a bizarre crack in front axle mount considering condition of rest of tractor.

Look for engine oil, hydralic, and rear end leaks.

If it runs, do you have to depress left pedal to start? If so, pedal safety switch intact.

Once running, does PTO engage? Does it stay engaged if you stand up? Many will disengage seat PTO safety switches. There is also a second seat safety switch which will kill motor if operator leaves the seat or prevent machine from being started without sitting on seat.

Will the PTO continue to operate in reverese? If so, reverse safety switch altered.

Are these deal breakers? Probably not. Might get a few more bucks off when you point out the machines short comings.

Good luck!

That should have a Kohler Mag engine so you may want to check the governor. The Mags are awesome engines but are also known for the broken governor gear issues and that is not any easy fix. Good luck, hope it's in great condition and you get it.

Where are you at in bama? There are a few plow days coming down south and it would be great to meet up.

Thanks for info Oak, I really appreciate it.

I'm in NE AL area, in the Gadsden area if you happen to know where that's at. I agree it would be great to meet fellow cub fans. I was speaking with another OCC member from TN and he and I were discussing how fortunate our northern OCC brethren are with all those tractors floating around up there. Our options are few and far in between for good tractors down here.

Thanks again for the advice and please keep us posted on any plow days down this way.

Will do on the PD's. Here is one from 2013 in Gadsden that I was at. Drew & Stewart put on a good one when they can but there is a lotta green in your area.

Thanks for the link to the Plow Day Oak. I work about 10 miles from Horton an that's a beautiful area. Was that a pic of Lake Guntersville you posted? If so another beautiful place. I would love to come if they have another one. If you hear of any in our area please post them.

I did go look at the 2082 this morning. It needs some TLC for sure. Been sitting outside for a while. I made him and offer but haven't hear anything back from him on it yet.

Thanks again for the info you shared. I'll keep you posted if I end up getting it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
