CC 1641 Return spring location
I recently purchased a cub cadet 1641 (model number 144-653-100 serial number 854682).It is going to be winter project. I was able to get it running. The brake/clutch pedal was hard to move and wouldn't return to the up position. Brake shaft bushings were frozen cleaned them up and it works well. Now after all of that my question is ,the brake return spring is missing,#11 below, it appears to hook on a pin that goes thru part 10 below. It's the other end location that is giving me a problem. I have checked the service manual ,parts list, but just haven't found the connection point. Where does it go? Thanks Dave

This is the left side of the tractor if you were sitting on it. You will see three bolt heads in this picture. Yours probably has four, but I have my wiring harness out right now so the fourth bolt above the bolt on the left is take out. The return spring attaches to the middle bolt. It's not fun to put on.

Agreed! I got educated on this when I installed my GT braces from XMW.

Yep that spring is a PITA. I use some safety wire to pull it from the back.

Thanks for the hint Sam Mac. Going to try it this afternoon. That's a pretty stout spring.

Take a piece of 1/4" round and make/bend a hook on one end and a handle of sorts on the other end.
Be safe, Ya don't want that spring to escape on you once it is stretched out. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
