Kohler pre -1965
How do you determine the build date of a K161 serial 413655 ? Since it is a six digit serial # without a letter designation, it is prior to 1965. Is there a year list for these? I trying to help a friend locate an early Kohler for a 3 digit Original serial # 934

Well I figured that would be a 2 second Google search--WRONG!
Seeing how I like really old stuff I kept searching. There seems to be a consensus that Kohler never published the info prior to 1965. I did find this one page that is interesting. Go 1/3 way down and try that link. I can't tell if it is for everything or just generators. If it is just gnerators, apparently Kohler still built them way into the 70's. http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...ler/Kohler.htm

Friend that I am helping has a pile of K161's, probably 10 engines anyway. At least 3 have the 6 digit serial without a letter prefix making them pre-1965. Two were in the 524- - - to 546 - - - range and one is definitely a 6 digit 413- - - number. It clearly is a 4 as first digit. We can tell this K161 is an early one, there are some very subtle differences in small items such as bolt head markings, brace for the oil bath air cleaner, and the serial badge, when compared to a letter prefix serial engine. My buddy thinks that the 413- - - motor came in on an early 4 digit Original.
Thanks for the link John. I think you are right that those serial number may be for the gensets. The serial numbers I have looked at don't seem to fall anywhere near that sequence.

I think the spec# is more important than serial#. There were only two spec#'s used on the Original.

If there is no Alpha letter at the start of the serial # it is pre 1965. I had a 3 digit O that had a serial # 4787xx. It was an early O being the 404th built.

The engine I am sending to NC came off a 3 digit, but never was able to get a serial number off it as it had metal welded over it to support the frame. It has correct spec and has a serial number of 4785xx

Thanks guys. Those two serial numbers give me an idea where it should be. The owner also has a couple of 4 digit Originals with engine serials in the 52xxxx range, so the numbers make sense. I appreciate the help!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
