Brake pads
I am trying to change the brake pads on my 104. I have gotten as far as the brake disk removal but can't figure out how to get it out to get to the pads.
How do you get the retainer out? I have tried and have had no luck. photo is attached as to where I am now. |

The book is kinda vague, it just says that, you don't have to remove the retainer to get the disk out but they recommend it so that you can inspect and replace the "O" ring...
My experience is that the hole where the ball is needs to be cleaned pretty well in order to get the ball out, I usually cut some sheet metal in the shape of an exacto knife blade, only a little bigger. Then I scrape it round and round in the hole "digging" farther down around the ball each time. Once the ball starts to get lose it will come out with a strong magnet. Then you can get a hold of the retainer with a small pair of vice grips and twist it (you only get a little movement) back and forth pulling it out while you turn it. The book does not say how to remove the brake linings, and even though I have has several apart, I have never had any that were worn badly enough that I felt the need to replace them. So I guess this is as far as I can go with this. Hopefully someone else will be of more help to you. Good luck |

First The best way to replace the brake pads is with a manual. Here is a link to a repair manual for your 104: http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/72_125service.pdf See page 2-18 in the manual. I have replaced a few brake pads in manual trans rear ends. You need to remove the rear end as describe on page 2-20 in the repair manual. It is easier to change brake pads by removing the reduction housing from the front of the transmission. Instructions can be found on page 2-21 thru 2-23. It is easy to remove the retainer and brake pads once the reduction housing is remove from the front of the transmission. You don't have to dig the ball out of the front of the retainer. I had problems removing the retainer on every brake job I did. Dirt in the bore where the retainer goes will make the retainer hard to remove. I would replace the O-ring on the retainer before you reassemble the brake system. |

Reduction housing removed from trans: You can pull brake disk out of housing and them remove pads. Reatiner and O-ring: Reduction housing: The 4 bolts that holds the reduction housing to trans need torque. The reapair manual from previous post has the torque spec. |

Thanks guys. I thought I would have to drop the trans but wasn't sure till now . Looks like that would be the quickest way.Thanks a lot for your quick reply.
