New to Me: 2186-48: Rotella T6 Hydro Fluid & Filter
Greetings all.
I've been wanting a CC since childhood. Finally, well into my adult years, and after lord knows how many rounds of push mowing my little over an acre I found a used 2186-48 (13B-288M100) on CL for a decent price. Currently doing a nearly complete restoration. I've been lurking around forum posts about repair methods, but I am a little fuzzy on a topic: the hydro transmission fluid, and filter. The OEM spec fluid for the hydro is cost prohibitive. Several people have used Rotella T6 5W-40 as a replacement. I want to do this, as well as use that same fluid in the engine. This is where I get a little confused. There seems to be an "either/or" with the fluid in the tranny. If you use T6, then you need to use this filter. If you use OEM fluid, then you use this filter. If you use dino oil, then you use this filter (different filter to prevent air lock I think is the reason). OEM filter spec for my model is CC part# 923-3014. I ordered a "Stens 120-265" transmission filter off Amazon. Will this Stens filter work on my hydro when using T6 5W-40? No air lock is the goal, obviously. I live in TX so I figured 5W-40 would be appropriate; only residential once a week use; Agreed? |

Why switch to an engine oil, when you can switch to a reasonable price hydraulic oil?
$37 for 5 gallons,,, https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...ydraulic-fluid This is what I use,,, |

I run T6 in several other toys I have.
T6 seems to work in most anything small engine and has given me good results in the past. I suppose I don't have to run synthetic motor oil in the transmission, but it would be easier for me. My question was seeking clarification on IF I use T6 synthetic motor oil in the transmission do I use the OEM filter or do I need a different type filter to prevent the air lock. |

I don't know anything about a Stens filter, these are the filters that have been recommended in the past.
Cub Cadet 923-3014 NAPA 1410 Wix 51410 Fleetgard HF6096 Baldwin BT8486 I have used Cub, NAPA & Wix with good results. I have used Rotella 15W40 also with good results.

That Stens filter is on this list that Roland put together. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12 I'm using one of them and the Tractor Supply Hydro fluid Cadplans linked in one of my Cubs. 1641 or 1863 can't remember which.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
