Default Repeated Backfires
I finally got my cub running after carb rebuild and such. This morning it's backfiring a LOT! Sometimes 3-5 times in a row! I searched the thread and didn't find the issue brought up in a previous thread.

What model tractor are you working on? Sounds like a timing issue.

Sorry. It's a 147. I turned the main jet screw to the left some and it seems to have subsided but I know the carb isn't adjusted very well yet. I've never been able to get the needles right on this thing

Find someone to tune it for you. An improperly tuned carb, can result in engine failure. If it is too lean, it can scorch the piston.

Intake or exhaust backfire?

Could be timing, as Tim suggested.
Could be a sticky exhaust valve.
Could be the valves out of adjustment.
Could be a worn out muffler and an exhaust leak in conjunction with a carb set too rich. That may sound far fetched, but it really isnt. I've seen it a lot. Check for exhaust leaks. Look the muffler over to see how thin it is. As they wear out, the thin metal heats up, sometimes red hot. It will ignite unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

the thin metal heats up, sometimes red hot.

I've seen the exhaust bend prior to the muffler be red hot before. I haven't had it running in the dark yet so I don't know if that's happening. It seems it was running lean. I wonder why it didn't do that before today. I haven't moved any of the carb pins.

A lean condition can cause superheated exhaust, but usually results in an intake backfire, not exhaust.

If you haven't tuned the carb, DO IT, or find someone who can. You can't just bolt them on and go. They have to be tuned.
