Yes, the keyset in the engine crankshaft. I believe it was due to a loose drive pulley that caused this damage. I've ordered a new drive pulley and I'm crossing my fingers.

A new pulley by itself will not completely cure this issue.. You need to address the crankshaft.

I wouldn't worry about it. Put a new pulley on and run it. It will likely last as long as that engine will. If it fails completely you will be back where you started. Fixing the keyway wouldn't be quick or easy. I've seen that before on those horizontal shaft motors. It does that because of the cheap pulley with the "dimple" instead of a true key.

If you want to do anything, have the dimple key bored out of the new pulley, have a keyway broached in it and a key made to fit the entire length of the pulley, and welded on both ends. That would do about as good as anything.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
