So what the heck?
I've got the cover off and done quite a bit of washing. There is oil- maybe the front seal, head gasket looks good around the exhaust port from what is visual. I believe it is OK. Possibly I a front seal leak. I degreased and pressure washed it all well. The noise- there is something loose in the muffler on the 1650. It is a metallic rattle if you hit it hard. That could account for the sudden noise change. I changed oil /airfilter for grins and will go cut the yard. See it it throws more oil. Maybe it's oil from missing the filler tube? Cub is old- but boy do I love cutting with this old CC! |

Ok,
Definately a bad seal- not a dripping seal but it's really a gusher. My Kohler hard copy says the PTO seal can be installed flush instead of 1/8 set back for a clean sealing surface. What do most ppl do... Off to buy some more gunk degreaser. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
