Not sure what the manufacturing year has anything to do with it. It's not fuel injected or computer controlled. Still just a carbureted engine with magneto ignition. All it needs to run is a fuel supply, 12V to the fuel solenoid and a starter. Like I've stated many times before, an engine only needs 3 things to run; fuel, air and fire (ignition). Sounds like you have it narrowed down to a fuel issue. If you don't understand the next step, refer to posts 13 and 14.

Need to clarify the "Ignition" with "at the right time"
Had a sheared flywheel key lead me down a head scratching path one time.
( I know Jon knows this)

Good point ! I had a Kawasaki 750 SXI jet ski back in the late 90's and went off a big wake, hit the water hard and it immediately started running terrible.

After hearing opinions from 25 "experts" (including me) and checking everything multiple times I finally realized...timing !!

Pulled the flywheel off and there it was, sheared key ! I was SO happy to see that. I guess the impeller bit into the water hard and the flywheel rotated just enough to shear the key, then since it was running so bad, never got under load or shock enough to rotate any further on the crankshaft.

Anyway, I'll always remember how happy I was to see that key sheared and that's all it was.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
