Default CH18s push rod length?

I recently repowered my 1872 with a CH18s from an 1863 (thanks to JeffinPA for the excellent parts and machine work!). The engine has about 700 hours on it. Seemed to run fine at first and have good power, was not using oil but it started to get a slight miss at idle and then I notice blow by. I figured it needed head gaskets and started tearing into it and noticed a slightly bent exhaust valve. Nothing seems to be out of place on the head so I ordered a replacement push rod. I ordered part number 2441105s.

The new push rod is 6 and 1/16 inch long and the original push rods are about 6 and 1/8 inch long. I am wondering if I ordered the wrong part or did Kohler decide that the push rods were to long? Should I replace all 4?

The engine spec is 62509 and the serial number starts with 243.

Thanks. Brian

Went to the Kohler Web Site and looked into "62509".

There are two different styles of Valve Parts. There is Style A & Style B.

Style A uses push rods: KIT - USE 24 755 66
Style B uses push rods: 24 411 05-S

I don't know what style you have on your engine.

Thanks for the reply. I did not find that style A/B information, interesting.

I looked up the part number 24 755 66 and it looks like it is the whole valvetrain as a kit. I then looked for the individual part numbers and found this:

Included with the kit:
4 x 2441105S Push Rods
4 x 2459902S Rocker Arm Pivots
4 x 2518601S Stamped Rocker Arm Saddles
4 x M640034S Hex Flange Screws

So the kit comes with the same push rod part number I ordered....

I am confused.......

So I decided to order the whole kit and will be putting it in. I'll make sure nothing is sloppy or binds before I try and start it. Will let you know how it goes when I am done.

Hi all. The engine is back together and seems to be running great. The kit instructions say that "if the engine has flat washers and/or push rod guide plates under the rocker pivots, discard them..." Mine had both. I wonder if this is the style A that R Bedell found a reference to and, due to changes, required the whole valvetrain kit.

My guess is the washers and guides were determined to be unnecessary or detrimental so the valvetrain was redesigned without them. This changed the geometry of the valvetrain causing the need for slightly shorter push rods. And/or maybe the rocker arms changed.

Anyway, at about $30 for the kit it was not to bad of a cost.

Thanks all.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
