Looks like the mystery is solved. Idle oil pressure.

I mounted up the deck today (44C) and put it to work. I mowed about 2 acres, and moved my pig house. It didn’t even break a sweat. Well, maybe a little. I have a leaking check valve to replace in the tranny. I kept smelling hytran while mowing and then I found it because it was getting up on the back edge of the tunnel cover. But other than that, no sweat.

Well I went to take the boy for a ride this evening on it and had a hard time getting it started. Finally it did and it blew blue smoke for a little bit and then cleared out. A long time ago I would have panicked. But I took the air intake apart and found some clean oil up in there from the breather tube. So I guess I’ll probably be replacing that breather assembly as well like I did on the 682. I’ll bet we’re missing an umbrella.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
