Default 126 Preventive Maintenance

When we moved to northwest Arkansas this past July, I started looking for a garden tractor to handle mowing and hauling. Since I needed something that would work hard and last a long time, another Cub Cadet seemed like a good plan.

Found one nearby that looked like it'd handle what I need to do. The PO had just changed the oil, but that was all the PM info I had. I figured it'd be a good idea to check things out and see where I stood. The easy stuff (oil change) had already been done, so I started at the top (sort of). I pulled the gas tank and cylinder head and took a good look at the piston and combustion chamber.

Hmmmm.... Looks like it needs a little work. Got started with my favorite tools - Scotchbrite, brake cleaner and beer.

Valves and seats cleaned up well, with no discernible side play. Piston top also came out pretty good; it's a standard, not oversize.

The combustion chamber/cylinder head was a PITA. Cleaning out the combustion chamber was no big deal. It looked a lot like the piston dome. All the deposits and crud came off. But there were two areas where the head gasket was starting to leak. So, I pulled out my glass plate for polishing and some 320 grit wet-or-dry and went to work. It took a LOT of back-and-forth to clean up that gasket surface. A SERIOUS pain! While I had the head and upper end disassembled, I went ahead and pulled off the cooling tin and checked for rats' nests. Pretty clean, so it all went back together.

With everything taken apart, it was a great time to rebuild the carb and do a complete tune-up. I searched and read a lot of posts on the pros and cons of electronic ignition systems. I decided to give Kirk Engines' Trandenser II a try.

Easy to install, works like a champ. I'll check my points every couple of months just to see if there's any noticeable wear. We'll see. So far, so good.

Yeah, the PO used it for years to take care of some properties he owned, so it definitely got put to use. For me, it's sorta "deja vu all over again". When we lived in east Texas, I had a 102 and it kept the lawn (3/4 acre) mowed for years. It also did a good job of dragging stumps to the burn pile. It truly was a great piece of machinery. It's a lot of fun having another one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
