Default K181 surges?

When I start my lil' 70 with its 7hp K181, it fires right up. Engage the clutch and mow my yard and it runs fine. But when I cut deck off, the engine surges? Whats that about?

Generally speaking, a surging situation is a "lean carb" or "air leak" getting into the combustion process.

I would have to agree with Roland. These Kohlers like to run on the rich side. Give your carb some tweaking while its surging and see if it gets better

top screw alongside the butterfly shaft
clockwise leans it, counter clock enriches.

note where main screw position is:
then,
run wide open throttle after warmed up, lean it till it misses/stumbles note position of screw head.
Then
Return to original position,
Again open throttle and enrichen it till it stumbles and a hint of black smoke.
Note position.
now between these 2 extremes is the sweet spot.
Error to the rich side, not lean.
Return to idle.
Now set the idle mixture screw, turn to lean till it tries to die, then back out 1/2-3/4 turn usually does the trick.
Now you may adjust the throttle position screw (RPM) to your liking if it has changed.
