How are Stens air filters?
Need to do the yearly replacement on my 129. I came across a Stens filter - cheap enough at around $5, but was just wondering if it's any good? On the cub parts website the part # for the filter is IH-385168-R3. They go for around $19. Other Cub websites also charge close to that. One outfit has a filter that looks like the right one for around $9. The only difference in the part # is R2 at the end. No idea what the 2 or 3 designations refer to (?) I imagine there are good number of filters that effectively cross-reference for the above IH number. As long as it has the proper shape that fits against the base, it should work. Any suggestions?
Also...in looking up these things on the Cub website, it refers to a round "air cleaner seal" - KH-237423. What is this? If there is supposed to be something between the base and the filter, I've never had it. Also interesting is that the air cleaner cover, as pictured, has a tube coming out of it on the top, then a clamp, and then a hose (IH-229453-R1). I'm finding all this under the model 129 assemblies and so am confused as to what 129 tractors might use something like this? Are these parts listed by mistake somehow and perhaps apply to models other than 129? |

The correct Cub Cadet Air Filter for the 129 is IH-385168-R2 ------> IH-385168-R3
The correct Kohler Air Filter is: 235116 -------> 25-883-03-S1 You can order these part numbers or use them as Cross Reference.

Thanks Roland. The Sten would fit....just not sure how good they are. I found one that cross references to the Kohler number you provided - as well as the IH number, so it's definitely the right one.

My experience with stens products/parts is they are oem quality.
I've not had a problem with the parts I've used, and never hesitate to use them. I'd say a good aftermarket choice. |

X3 here I use stens products as well with positive results, and they are cheap enough to replace when in questionable condition.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
