2011 Cub 1040 LTX about to go in the River!
Hello,
Hoping somebody can help me out..., before I throw this thing in the river! So, here are the issues: 1. When in gear (Forward) and going down slight hill, comes out of gear and free-rolls. 2. Odd noise, not metal on metal, in forward gear & very slow. 3. In reverse, definite metal-on-metal sound To try to resolve, prior to tearing out the transmission.....I have 1. replaced upper & lower belts 2. checked pulleys for wobble/lose 3. replaced several springs having to do with engagement of drive belts. I cannot seem to find a good diagram on exactly where to connect belt #27 per cub parts diagram. One end goes to pulley bracket, but I don't see where to connect other end? There is "A lot" of apparent reasons other than transmission...but thinking it is the transmission. Any other things to consider???? |

Don't pollute the river.... Bury it in the ground..
JK.. but trans may actually be gone.. Double check belt routing. Someone here will have a manual or know the routing.

In any event, you have a single speed geared transmission that is belt driven. Motion speed is changed by a variable sized pulley driving the belt for the transmission. The simple fact that the tractor moves at all leads me to doubt that you have transmission problems. Issues #2. Just a shot in the dark on this but I have seen many times where the fiber pads for the brake system (see part #11 in pic) for the mover deck get worn down to the point where you have metal on metal. The fact that the friction of the belt trying to drag the deck spindles will give you noise even when the mower deck is disengaged. Issue #3. Looking at parts diagram, I don't understand what your saying about "belt #27". If you don't have spring #25 hooked up, that could possibly give you free wheeling. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
