My XT2 XL42 isn't mulching right
I have an XT2 XL42 that's about 1.5 year old. I alway use the mulching kit and I sharpen my blades at least once a year and keep my deck's underside clean.
I notice that my unit allows grass to shoot forward from the top of the deck and sometimes even leaves a trail of cut grass lined up with the deck's left edge. I had 1042 before my current tractor and I didn't have the same problems that I do now. I have the mulching blade installed and the mulching blocking device installed with the front pin in the hole and the top/side bracket fully installed. Grass also accumulates in the gap b/w the mulch 'plug' on the right side and the deck's right side bottom lip. With the mulch plug installed, it doesn't have a tight fit even with everything installed properly. When I am done cutting the grass, you can readily see cut grass on the lawn's surface as it isn't being mulched properly into very small pieces and falling to the dirt. Any idea as to what I can do to fix my problem. I have some videos that I shot, with the unit running but don't know if I can add them to my post. I will add photos though. One shows cut grass blowing around instead of being contained below the deck to be diced and mulched. The other photo shows the accumulation of cut grass on the deck's right edge with the mulch plug installed. I generally don't cut more than an inch or so at a time, so it doesn't appear that I am cutting too much grass at a time and the blades can't handle the volume. Curious what I can try to fix this? Thanks. |

I never had any luck mulching grass. There is too much moisture in the cut grass to chop up. I've tried several different styles mower blades.
Keeping the mower blades sharp and deck clean is a big must. I usually had a slower ground speed too. When needed I will use my grass collection system. I will mulch leaves in the fall. I gave up mulching grass because it was hard on blades.

As part of monthly maintenance, I sharpen the blades and clean the deck. If you're only sharpening the blades once a year, then that seems to be too infrequent.
Agree with Merk on this one. |

Pull the deck out from under the tractor. Let's see a pic of the underside of the deck before you start cleaning.

My XT1 46 also blows grass to the front of the deck when mulching but I haven't noticed any other issues and doesn't seem to affect the mulching ability.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
