2166 blowing fuse when engine is turned off
My 2166 with Kohler ch16 blows the red/red 25A fuse when the ignition switch is turned off while the engine is running. Replace the fuse, lights come on, engine starts and runs fine. PTO works fine too. What could be shorting as the ignition is turned to the off position?

Check your head light wiring.

First, welcome to OCC.....
First culprit I would look at is your Ignition Switch. The Switch normally has a Ground path to kill the Magneto (M Terminal on switch) and maybe has an internal short now.

Seems I read somewhere a feller had a similar problem and it turned out that the last revolution of the engine caused it to shake just enough that a wire grounded and caused a fuse to blow.
That said, one might look at the Schematic to see what is powered by said blowing fuse, and carefully look at the wires/components for things that are not like they otter bee |

thanks all. The headlight wiring was indeed shorting, fixed that and the headlights work and the fuse has not blown. However, the starter motor will now not engage at all. Replaced the solenoid with no change. Turn the key and ... nothing. checked the voltages at the solenoid and have battery voltage at both the starter terminal and the solenoid terminal when the key is turned to the start position. So maybe the magneto kill in the ignition switch ?

Get to the basics.... Check the wires leading to starter and make sure they are clean, bright and tight.

This is the wiring diagram for the 2166. Check to see if you have 12 volts at the blue wire on the solenoid for the starter when you turn the key to the start position. Also did you replace the ignition switch by any chance? Reason I ask is we have seen on more than one occasion the switch had been replaced with one from TSC or like and it was the wrong switch.

This is a 2135 but it has the same setup as far as the starter goes as the 2166. The blue wire energizes the solenoid when you turn the key to start. Red arrow points to the wire.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
