Question CH20s Degraded due to load?

Cub Cadet 2518
Kohler CH20S
210hrs
48" deck

I was mowing thick field going very slow and taking care not to take too big of a cut. The engine was under high load due to the cut grass mixed with the uncut but I was paying close attention and not letting it bog. I hit the PTO off on two occasions withing 5 min then I bogged it twice in the next 2 min w/o getting to the pto shut-off in time to unload the engine. The load caused a stall out each time. After the 2nd, the engine did not recover. I managed to start it and then the engine immediately ran poorly for ~ 30 sec as it slowly stumbled and died.

After some attempts and experimenting, I was only able to limp back to the garage from the field by starting and running with choke on and throttle at 1/4. The engine would stumble and sound as if one cylinder was coming and going. More throttle (air) or no choke (less fuel) would cause it to die.


I did not have diagnostic tools at location so I'll head back to check compression and bring a DVM to check ignition.

Apart from the problems above, in the dark garage I would see a blue flame out the exhaust during backfires when stumbling so perhaps an exhaust valve is part of the problem as I have seen similar on other engines when exhaust valve does not seal.

Does anyone have guidance or have they had a similar experience with this engine?

I have two 1864s And both of them within the last year behaved very similar to yours. I thought it was heat related on the first one instead both of them were fuel supply issues with the lines getting old and a bit of trash in the fuel tank. The shut off valves on my newer one began to corrode and restrict the fuel supply as well

I found the problem. The previous owner used cheap Champion plugs. One had cracked at the porcelain. When I compared the two its ink lettering was blurry and the embossed text was wrong.... probably a fake from China. I put some NGKs in now it is fine
