Somebody help me out here, how do you get rid of an integral part of the frame?

Heck, I even tossed the four screws that held the cover on,, and switched to "sprung" cotter pins to hold the cover in place.

The cotter pins had the legs spread slightly, you would squeeze the legs, and insert the cotter pin, the head was big enough to not fall through.

Forward / reverse friction, the fan, relief valves, drive shaft components,,
THEN there was the accumulated dirt on the transmission that needs washed,,
pull the cover, PULL THE COVER,,, PULL THE COVER!! - .

Pulling the cover off the 149, then pulling the cover off the 1872,, THAT was the reason I switched to a gear drive machine,,,

Educate the inept...

why does the tunnel cover have to come off annually? Just to clean it out?

If it is used a lot, stuff needs attention.
If it is a trailer queen, then nothing needs fixed because of wear/usage/crud.

As ol'George said,, only real hard users understand the need for service,,

casual users (1/4 acre lawn,, or trailer puller, or even snow plow, or tiller is light duty) never need to service under the cover,,

Mow 4 acres a week, in dry conditions, (toss in a minor oil leak on a machine of this age) and just the grass seed that is accumulated will amaze most,,

I would think a monthly shot of compressed air up the tunnel would be enough to keep the grass in check on a NF.

Still wondering how someone would remove the tunnel area on a NF......

I think the term "get rid of" is a little beyond what is being discussed here. You would still want the 1/2 that would be bolted/pinned on Plus front half should remain on tractor. The frame wont come apart from removing it. The rear will hold it together, plus the other half of the tunnel cover not being removed, and there are plenty of attachment points in the front..

Ok I see. I was looking through the lens of mine being on the shop floor right now split in half (or it was until just a week ago). I briefly thought about cutting a 3 inch deep hinged flap at the back of that part of the structure but just couldn't bring myself to do it.
