Hey Everyone,
I just picked up an 1863 with about 310hrs on it. It's not the prettiest, it looks like it spent its' life outside unfortunately. It's in good mechanical condition as far as i can tell though. ![]() I'm an electrical engineer by day, but i really like to work on just about anything with engines. I've been into cars/jeeps for a while but i recently bought a house and finally bought a riding mower. I was using a much newer i1050 that i borrowed from a coworker, but i kinda like the older machines and they cost a lot less to buy

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
So far i really like it. There are a couple things i need to investigate of course, but hopefully nothing major. - need a mower discharge shoot, looked up a new one $170 ouch! - steering is loose and seems to turn farther left than right - reverse hydraulics seem weak sometimes, other times they feel strong otherwise it seems pretty solid! Definitely beefier than the i1050 i've been using :biggrin2.gif: |

great Cub you have....I always liked the looks of the cyclops series Keep your eyes open for a used chute, check with the vendors at the top of the page, or post a wanted ad here...I'm sure someone has one. Your loose steering is pretty common among well used cubs. Check all the rod ends for wear...there is a lot of info posted here about replacement joints, and retrofitting heim joints which are a far more durable replacement, and a common upgrade. The tech section also has articles about rebuilding the steering column if need be. The first thing I always do with a "new to me" cub is, change the engine oil, plug, fuel filter, plug, hydro fluid and filter. I bet if you change the hydro fluid, and filter, you will see a difference in the responsiveness of your hydro....there are some other tips and tricks you'll pick up along the way as well... welcome!! Jeff (teet)

I will definitely be scouring the pages of this website for a while. I have started looking and there isn't a whole lot on the 1863, were these tractors not very popular? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
