Dash Panel/Columns swap for a 107?
Hi there, new to the forum. I just picked up a 107 that has seen better days, but runs; however, the plastic dash panel is cracked, badly bent tin, and it is from a 106.
I was looking at the models for when IH switched over from a metal column and dash over to a two piece and it looked like a 73 series might fit if I replace the whole column. Does anyone have any experience? Tried to see if anyone has reverted a newer dash to the older style, but fell short. I mostly just want to future proof it and remove the plastic dash component as it would probably break again if I repaired it. |

the 106 and the 107 are basically the same cowl (decals are different) and the same hood because they are from the same series - manual trans vs hydrostat.
in this range the evens are the manuals and the odds are the hydrostats - 1x2/3, 1x4/5, 1x6/7, 1x8/9 the body work is the same within the individual groupings. There are some cross-overs of body parts in multiple groupings |

The plastic dash panel doesn't commonly break unless treated with extreme abuse (or like dropping heavy items on it, don't do that). Making sure there's a rubber or foam lining around where the hood contacts the plastic, makes less rattle and protects the plastic even more. I do believe that if you pull the steering wheel, hydro control, ammeter, and choke, and remove the old broken one, simply mounting a replacement one (and possibly replacement dash tin if you can find one) will do and it shouldn't break.
If you really do wish to have an all-metal 107, I do believe the dash from the 1X2/1X3 series mounts to the frame the same way. You will want the dash from a 123 because it is the only hydrostatic with an all-metal dash. Assuming the hydro control is in the same place on the 123, you shouldn't have much trouble bolting it up and connecting the linkage together

Yes there are other issues, longer choke and throttle cables, no more amp meter either. Easier to find a dash...

All of this is very good information. I was pretty sure that there would be a bolt on compatible tower.
My dash has a big crack from the implement lever(someone welded it on crooked and rubs the dash panel and I assume that is the cause and my tin is really poor condition with a big bend in the top right corner. I saw the prices on ebay, and for a piece of plastic that is 50 years old it is pretty high. If I keep a plastic dash, I would use a highly fluid adhesive to fill the crack and repaint and I would have to probably get a new tine, make a new one from scratch, or try to fasten down the bent section on the current one. I think the biggest issue would be the steering column. I will have to try to see if the measurements would work. |
