If you had the head off, and aligned the flywheel timing mark to the "T" mark you should see the piston at exactly top dead center and both the intake and exhaust valves should be fully closed.
Rocking the flywheel slightly back and forth in both directions you should see some movement of the valves. However, I dont know what it would look like if the gears were one tooth off. It might not be enough to gauge by looking at the valves. In order to actually see the marks you have to remove the aluminum bearing plate. Question: Do you have coil ignition or magneto ignition? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
