CH20 Oil pressure drop
I noticed the problem when I was still mowing grass, but thought maybe because the oil and filter needed changed, now after new oil and filter it still does it. When I start it after sitting for several days, the oil pressure will come right up to about 20 psig at about 1500 rpm then drop to almost 0, the sensor light will come on and after about 20 sec. or so the pressure will come up to about 35 psig and hold there. I also noticed when mowing sometimes the pressure would change from 35 to 30 psig at about a 2 sec. rate. Other than this problem, the engine runs great. Oil was still on the full mark when I changed at 50 hrs. Has anyone else had this problem or has any ideas?

Can't say that I've had that issue. That 20sec of little or no pressure doesn't sound good. I wouldn't run it but that's just me.

Maybe it's not 20 sec., but it seems like a long time. I have shut it off when the pressure dropped and restarted it after a few seconds. The 2nd time is a bit slow pumping up, but it comes up and stays up.

What are you using for oil and filter?

I am using Shell Rotella T6. The filter I took off was a Kohler filter and this one I can't recall the brand but it is a Kohler replacement. This has happened when the ambient was 40 to 65 deg. One time that it happened the tractor made a noise like a hydraulic valve bypassing.

Maybe it would be worth trying some straight 30 or 40W oil and a new kohler filter. Other than that something may be going wrong inside. Maybe a pressure relief or something like that.
I know the book calls for 10-W30.

I looked at the service manual for the CH, if I had to make a guess I would bet on a pressure relief problem. Good news is that it can be serviced by only pulling the front cover off the engine. Not easy but not the worst thing in the world.

I looked in the service manual myself. Maybe if I get moved or inspired I'll do that. Maybe when the snow is melted in the spring. Thanks for the reply.

I found the problem
I know folks like to know the rest of story, so after 4 years of watching the oil pressure gauge fluctuate, I decided to open the engine and see what was going on. While removing the bolts, I noticed that someone had been into the engine. When I removed the oil pickup tube from the pump, I noticed the o-ring had a slight problem. Apparently it would suck in a gulp of air every couple of seconds and cause the gauge to flicker. The oring is located at just below the top of the oil level. It looks like someone put the ring in dry and it rolled instead of sliding. Just don't know why someone would have taken it apart. A new o-ring and it works like a new one. The engine always had good pressure so I wasn't real concerned.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
